Printmaking Gallery
As an acrylic painter, I must rethink paint/ink application before
I begin to create an oil monotype print. Ink placed first onto the plate
does not necessarily appear in the final print—at least not that
same color. Since the ink is opaque with a consistency of tepid melted
chocolate, I dilute the ink to a spreadable, tacky mixture. What surfaces
as I manipulate the ink often results in effects that I cannot achieve
in any other medium. During the process, I give up my control, my ego,
my academic training and “play”. I recapture my youth to
some extent—that glorious time when color and texture use is pure
joy. Oil monotypes capture the essence of what I am feeling at that
particular time. After each printing session, I can return to acrylic
painting with a fresh approach and renewed spirit.
